Question: "Lindsay, what do you do when you're not motivated or you don't feel like working out?"
Answer: This can be a loaded question so first let’s determine whether or not you actually enjoy what you are doing for fitness. If you are dreading what you’re about to do perhaps it’s time to let that thing go and find something more aligned with what your heart truly wants.
Always listen to your own body first. It’s magic!
You have to know yourself well enough to say “this no longer serves me” and determine whether or not you need to stop it, or start something else, but regardless keep trying new things and keep searching until you do find what you love.
So I would highly suggest you do one of 3 things…
1. Find something you love to do and that feels good for you. You do not have to do anything you don't love. Period. It can be anything that gets your body moving. Fitness should energize you and make you feel so great while doing it.
2. Sometimes you do need to just pull up your big girl pants, tune out that negative voice from within, put on some good upbeat music, and make it happen regardless of how you feel. Give yourself 10 minutes of working out and see how you feel. If after the first 10 minutes you're still not motivated, or you're still not feeling it, then take this as a sign that it's time to stop.
3. Take the focus off of fitness right now and give your body a break. Allow yourself to be lazy, sleep, rest, take a nap, and don’t stress about it right now. Motivation will always come and go so it's important you are working out for the added benefits of physical activity and not just to look good or to get some place other than where you are right now. Try Yin yoga and just lay on the floor and breathe. (My personal favourite thing to do).
When the timing is right, you'll know what feels right and best for you.
