Spiritual Awakening

Spiritual awakening is often described as a moment of profound realization, clarity, or expanded consciousness. Many people imagine it as a single life-changing event that permanently solves inner struggles and leads to constant peace, but don't be fooled.  Your wake up call and coming home to yourself looks like nothing like sunshine and rainbows or all light and love.

In fact, it messy, it's real, it's raw, it's dark, it's scary, it's lonely, it's brutally fucking painful at times.

It can look more like sitting on the floor in a puddle of snot, blood, piss, tears and shit realizing just how much you've been missing out on in your life.

In reality, awakening is the beginning of a deep spiritual transformation that unfolds over time.  Years and even decades if I'm being completely honest.  So if you're looking for a quick fix to happiness, health, life transformation, success, or real inner peace.  Good luck, I wish you well, but you won't find it here or anywhere else for that matter.

One of the most important shifts that occurs after awakening is this: The conscious higher self begins leading life instead of unconscious conditioning or a wounded inner child.

The is a holy fuck moment mixed with a lot of sadness, guilt, shame, embarrassment, and even regret because you soon come to realize that you might have built a life based on fear, past conditioning, generational trauma, or a wounded inner child that was doing their very best to survive.

There is also another profound awakening that happens when you have done the work to heal your wounds and face all of your fears:  You are now in the drivers seat as a your adult self and you are in full control of your destiny and the life you create starting right now, and the best part?  Once you truly learn how to master your mindset, focus your energy, and claim what has always been yours, no one can ever really stop you from accomplishing what you set out to do.

But let's be real here.  This journey is not for the faint of heart.  As awakening deepens, a series of internal stages often unfold. Old emotional patterns surface, identity reorganizes, relationships change, and eventually even the sense of being a separate psychological self may soften.

This blog explores the entire process of transformation after spiritual awakening, from unconscious patterns, to integration, to the profound realization that awareness itself may be the deepest ground of identity.

Life Before Awakening: When the Unconscious Runs the System

Before awakening, most people live largely from unconscious conditioning.

This does not mean people are unintelligent or unaware. It simply means that many reactions, behaviours, and decisions are driven by emotional patterns that were engrained in them since early childhood.  These patterns often originate in childhood when the nervous system was learning how to stay safe, connected, and accepted.

Common unconscious survival strategies include:

  •  Seeking constant approval or validation
  •  Avoiding conflict to prevent rejection
  •  People-pleasing in order to feel accepted
  •  Overworking to prove worth
  •  Suppressing emotions to maintain stability
  •  Reacting defensively to criticism

These patterns develop because they once served a protective function.

A child who learned that love was conditional might become extremely accommodating or a self-sacrificing people pleaser.

A child who experienced criticism might develop perfectionism. A child who felt emotionally unsafe might learn to shut down feelings and over time these strategies become automatic.

As adults, people often feel as though they are making conscious choices, yet many behaviours are actually driven by unconscious emotional programs formed years earlier.

This is why people sometimes notice patterns like:

  •  Repeating similar relationship dynamics
  •  Reacting intensely to small triggers
  •  Feeling compelled to prove themselves
  •  Struggling with persistent anxiety, depression or self-doubt

In these moments, the adult higher self is not fully in the driver’s seat. Instead, reactions are being led by unresolved emotional patterns or a wounded inner child.

The Moment of Awakening: Seeing the Mind Clearly

Spiritual awakening often begins when a person suddenly recognizes something profound:

Thoughts, emotions, fears, and reactions can be observed.

Instead of being completely immersed in every thought or emotional reaction, a new perspective emerges. There is awareness of the inner experience rather than total identification with it.

People often describe realizing things like:

  •  “That reaction is happening inside me, but it is not all of me.”
  •  “My thoughts are appearing, but I can observe them.”
  •  “I can notice emotions without being completely controlled by them.”

This shift is sometimes described as witnessing awareness. The individual discovers that they are not simply the stream of thoughts running through the mind. There is a deeper awareness that can observe the entire inner landscape and this realization can feel incredibly freeing.

For the first time, a person may sense that automatic patterns do not have to control their life forever. However, awakening does not immediately dissolve all emotional conditioning. Instead, it begins a much deeper process.

The Emergence of the Higher Self

Once awareness begins observing thoughts and emotional patterns, a new internal leader often emerges. This is sometimes referred to as the higher self.  Others may call it the Adult Self, Christ Consciousness, God, Divine Self, True Self, Spirit Self, Universal Conciousness, Divine Presence, Source Energy, Higher Consciousness,  The Mind of God, Christ Mind, Spirit of God, Sacred Self, Inner Light, Divine Guide.... Whatever you want to call "It"..  It's there, for The Kingdom of God is within.

This is the part of the psyche capable of:

  •  calm observation
  •  emotional regulation
  •  compassion toward inner wounds
  •  thoughtful decision-making
  •  long-term perspective
  •  balanced responses rather than impulsive reactions

Before awakening, emotional reactions might look like this:

Something "bad" happens → stress and worry appear → you react and respond from fear and often exude more energy than needed, and the cycle continues.

After awakening, a different process becomes possible:

Something "bad" happens → your unconscious thoughts and manifestation appear in real life → awareness notices the cause and ultimately the effect you have produced → your higher self chooses how to respond and chooses to think, feel, and behave differently the next time.

The emotion may still arise, but it no longer controls the entire system. This shift marks the beginning of true inner leadership, real self-mastery, and real inner peace.

Why the Wounded Inner Child Often Becomes Louder After Awakening

One of the most surprising things people experience after awakening is that old emotional wounds often become more noticeable. Many people expect awakening to eliminate emotional pain. Instead, unresolved feelings sometimes surface more intensely.

This happens for several reasons.

First, awakening reduces the distractions that previously kept emotions hidden under the rug and suppressed. Activities that once helped avoid difficult feelings, constant busyness, overthinking, overworking, shopping, over eating or emotional numbing may lose their effectiveness.

Second, when awareness grows stronger, the nervous system may finally feel safe enough to release previously suppressed material.

Emotions that were buried for years may begin to surface, including:

  •  childhood grief
  •  suppressed anger
  •  feelings of abandonment
  •  unresolved sadness
  •  fear or vulnerability

This stage is not regression. It is integration beginning to happen. The psyche is bringing forward what needs attention so it can finally be processed and healed.

The Role of the Higher Self in Healing

As these emotional layers arise, the higher self plays a crucial role. Instead of suppressing emotions or acting them out impulsively, the adult self learns to hold the experience with compassion, love, empathy and awareness.

A trigger may arise, but instead of reacting automatically, the inner response becomes something like:

“I notice this pain arising. I understand why it is here. I can stay present with it. You are safe, and everything will be okay”

This approach allows emotional patterns to gradually soften.

The wounded inner child does not disappear. Instead, it becomes supported by a stable internal presence.  Over time, the mind begins to reorganize. Triggers become less intense. Emotional reactions become less overwhelming. The nervous system learns that difficult feelings can be experienced without losing control.

When the Higher Self Stabilizes

As integration deepens, a major shift occurs. The wounded child is no longer running the emotional system. The higher self becomes the primary leader. This does not mean emotions disappear. It means reactions are no longer automatic or uncontrollable.

A situation that once caused a strong emotional spiral may now unfold differently:

Criticism arises → a younger part feels hurt → awareness notices the reaction → the higher self responds thoughtfully.

The pause between stimulus and response grows larger. This pause creates freedom.

How Relationships Change After Awakening

As the higher self becomes stronger, relationships often begin to shift.

Many relationships are built on unspoken psychological contracts.

These contracts might involve:

  •  mutual people-pleasing
  •  shared complaints or negativity
  •  maintaining familiar roles
  •  avoiding difficult conversations

When someone becomes more conscious, these patterns may no longer feel comfortable.

People may notice themselves:

  •  setting clearer boundaries
  •  speaking more honestly
  •  avoiding unhealthy dynamics
  •  withdrawing from conversations that revolve around gossip, complaining or negativity

This does not mean relationships must end, but the structure of the relationship may change. Some relationships deepen and become more authentic. Others gradually fade and the season is over.

Outgrowing Environments and Careers

Awakening often shifts not only relationships but also life direction.

Many people discover that their previous career choices were influenced by unconscious motivations such as:

  •  seeking approval
  •  pursuing status
  •  proving self-worth
  •  following societal expectations

As awareness deepens, these motivations may lose their power.

This can lead to important questions:

  •  Does my work align with my values?
  •  Does this environment support my well-being?
  •  Am I expressing my creativity and authenticity?

For some people this leads to career changes. For others it simply leads to a new relationship with their work. The focus often shifts from external validation to inner alignment, and once you awaken, there is no more abandoning yourself or doing work that no longer serves your highest good or brings you joy.

The Transitional Loneliness Phase

During this transformation there is often a temporary stage where people feel between identities.

Old environments may no longer feel aligned, but new connections have not fully formed yet.

This stage can feel like:

  •  loneliness
  •  uncertainty
  •  disorientation
  •  questioning one's path

Although it can be uncomfortable, it is often a natural part of the restructuring process. As internal alignment stabilizes, life gradually reorganizes around the new level of awareness.  Use this time to really take care of yourself and be the best version you can be.  Use this time to do things that make you happy.  Take care of your health, your body, your family, your home and do things that bring you joy.  Focus on yourself and your own path and get excited about what you are creating for yourself in the future.

The Spiritual Ego Phase

Another subtle stage can appear after significant progress.

The mind may begin forming a new identity around being spiritually aware.

Thoughts might arise such as:

  •  “I understand reality more deeply than most people.”
  •  “I am more conscious than others.”
  •  “I have transcended ego.”

These thoughts are often subtle and easy to believe because they contain elements of genuine insight. However, they can become another form of identity. The mind shifts from identifying with ordinary roles to identifying with being the awakened one. Recognizing this stage requires humility and honesty. Awareness eventually sees that any identity the mind claims can become another attachment.

When the Observer Identity Begins to Dissolve

Earlier in awakening, people discover the ability to observe thoughts and emotions. At first, the mind may adopt a new identity: “I am the observer.”

But with deeper inquiry, another realization may appear. Even the sense of being the observer can be noticed. If the observer can be observed, then perhaps awareness itself does not belong to a separate individual. This insight can lead to a profound shift in identity.

The Experience of Groundlessness

Right before this deeper shift stabilizes, many people encounter a phase sometimes described as groundlessness and the mind may feel uncertain or disoriented.

People sometimes report experiences such as:

  •  feeling like the sense of self is dissolving
  •  noticing a vast openness within awareness
  •  feeling momentary existential anxiety
  •  wondering what remains if the self is not fixed

The nervous system can initially interpret this as a threat because identity structures that once provided stability are weakening. However, what is actually dissolving is not existence itself, but the assumption that you have to control or fix everything.

Discovering the Nature of Awareness

As resistance to this experience relaxes, many people notice something surprising. Life continues exactly as before. Thoughts still appear, emotions still arise, the body functions normally. What changes is the sense that there is a separate controller behind everything.

Instead, awareness simply exists, and experiences arise within it. The personality continues functioning, but it feels lighter and less defended.

The Expansion of Intuition and Sensitivity

When the mind is no longer spending so much energy maintaining identity structures, awareness often becomes more open and responsive.

Many people notice an increase in:

  •  intuitive decision-making
  •  emotional sensitivity
  •  creative insight
  •  ability to sense subtle social dynamics

Decisions may arise more quickly and naturally rather than through excessive mental analysis. Creativity often increases because the mind is less rigidly controlling outcomes. Social awareness may also deepen because attention is no longer focused primarily on protecting the self-image.

Authentic Relationships and Emotional Presence

As identity softens, relationships often become more genuine.

People may notice:

  •  less need to impress others
  •  greater emotional honesty
  •  deeper listening
  •  more authentic communication

Interactions become less about managing perception and more about being present with another human being.

A More Fluid Personality

Another interesting change is that personality becomes more flexible. Rather than feeling locked into a rigid identity, people may find themselves responding naturally to each situation.

Different qualities can arise depending on what is needed in the moment:

  •  seriousness
  •  humor
  •  compassion
  •  strength
  •  creativity

The personality becomes an expression of awareness rather than a fixed self-definition.

The Return to Simplicity

One of the most unexpected aspects and perhaps the best part of deep awakening is that life often becomes very ordinary again. The mind stops searching for a dramatic spiritual state or constant transformation.

Simple experiences become vivid and meaningful:

  •  walking outside
  •  sharing conversation
  •  preparing food
  •  watching the changing sky
  • cleaning your house

Life is no longer filtered as heavily through the question of “What does this mean for me?” Instead, experience unfolds more directly.

Awakening and Integration

The process of awakening and integration often follows a general pattern:

  1. Life driven by unconscious emotional patterns and a wounded inner child
  2. Awakening introduces awareness of thoughts and reactions
  3. The higher self emerges and begins leading life
  4. Old emotional wounds surface for healing
  5. Relationships and environments reorganize
  6. A spiritual identity may temporarily form
  7. The observer identity softens or dissolves
  8. Awareness stabilizes without a rigid center
  9. Life becomes more intuitive, authentic, and simple

This journey does not happen in a perfectly linear way. People may revisit stages multiple times as deeper layers emerge.

The True Outcome of Awakening

Contrary to popular belief, awakening does not turn someone into a permanently blissful or transcendent being. Instead, it gradually leads to something both simpler and more profound.

The personality continues functioning, emotions continue arising, life continues presenting challenges and opportunities, but the experience of life is no longer dominated by unconscious conditioning, fear, worry or rigid identity.

Instead, there is greater:

  •  presence
  •  clarity
  •  emotional freedom
  •  authenticity
  •  compassion
  •  openness to experience
  • peace
  • confidence

The higher self leads the human life with wisdom and care, while awareness itself remains the quiet background in which all experience unfolds. In the end, awakening is less about becoming extraordinary and more about returning to a natural way of being that was always present beneath layers of conditioning.
